Zinging the Living Tradition redux

I was working on the Christmas eve service today. We’ve had to print up a little booklet with the old, familiar words to the Christmas carols so we don’t have to sing the new, revised words in the Unitarian Universalist hymnal, Singing the Living Tradition. Because of that, I will just have to inflict on you, o hapless reader, yet another parody of a hymn from Singing the Living Tradition:

Be reassured! We’ve changed the words
Of all your Christmas songs.
We’ve made them up to date,
Got rid of words we hate.
(And made them all sound wrong,

and made — and made, them all sound wrong!)

For far too long, those bad old songs
Our hearts and minds infect’d!
But now we’ve bowlderized,
We’ve totally revised:
Politic’lly correct’d,
Politic’lly correct’d,
Poli — poli-tic’lly correct’d.

    I’ve always hated the UU version of Joy to the World – and always obstinantly sing the “right” words.

    Made them all sound wrong, indeed!!

    You mean some congregations actually use the bowlderized version? How about that! (The Unitarian Universalist congregations I know of all print the old words, from the old red hymnal, in the order of service.)
