This came in from Mass Equality at 11:38 this morning: “Moments ago, the Vermont Legislature voted to overturn Governor Douglas’s veto and recognize marriage equality for all…. Vermont is the first state to recognize marriage equality through direct legislative initiative. Vermont joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Iowa as the fourth state to recognize equal marriage rights.”
No surprise that they got the 100 votes, or that they would be the first state legislature to make it happen without a judicial nudge? (Of course, California’s has done it twice–but couldn’t overcome two vetoes.)
Amy — No surprise they got the votes to overturn the veto. I still can’t figure out the governor’s political motivation on the veto — does he think the veto will gain him votes in Vermont? Maybe you know the political scene in Vermont — any ideas?
